(Maricarmen Abascal, a woman who became a symbol of the housing rights movement in Madrid, Spain, was forcibly evictedfrom her home in the Retiro district of Madrid on September 23, 2026, at the age of 87. She had lived in the same home since 1956, for approximately 71 years. Immediately following her eviction, she was taken to hospital and died on October 7, 2026. Her case sparked a sit-in at Puerta del Sol, Madrid’s central square, and spread into housing rightsdemonstrations across Spain.)
